Fed-up with how your parents carry on about your student years being the cruiseist years of your life? They certainly don't seem to worry about how stressful uni can be. Maybe it was easy for them with their tie-dyed shirts and brownies in the 70s and 80s, when all university students had to worry about was when the next protest march was.
And now the 70s are five, yes five decades ago. And student life is about five decades different. All the chilled-out coffee slurping, pipe smoking, newspaper reading intellectuals seem to have been replaced by smart-phone texting maniacs bouncing about high on energy drinks.
Our parents seem to think that the internet has taken all the hard work out of studying, yet perhaps the expectations of students these days is even greater because of the technological advances. Whatever it is, there is plenty for students to stress about these days.
How students remain resilient in the face of daily stress is a topic of a current research study being conducted by Queensland's Griffith University. The study is called "The effects of stress on physical activity levels in university students" and it's inviting students from all over Australia to participate.
The on-line survey will help researchers understand just how stressful the student years look right now, and what effects stress might be having on physical activity levels. Surprisingly, very little is known on the subject.
Maybe because like our parents, many working people deny that being a student could be stressful. But a quick walk around any campus can confirm things have changed.
If you're a student and can shed some light, you'd not only be helping yourself, you'd be helping others as well.
