Special Consideration

If you would like to apply for special consideration, you will need to complete an application form. These are available from your faculty office and online at the following links:

Special Consideration is available to students who have had their studies adversely affected by:

  • Acute illness
  • Misadventure
  • Other extraordinary cause or circumstance reasonably beyond their control

This situation must be unusual, uncommon or abnormal and have significantly impacted on a student’s study during the teaching period.


To be eligible for Special Consideration students would have met all other mandatory assessment criteria and must have complied with the assessment requirements as set out in the course outline and met one of the criteria below:  

  • A student has been prevented from preparing or presenting for all or part of a component of assessment such as assignments and examinations; or
  • A student has been, to a significant degree, adversely affected 
  • during the performance of a component of assessment

Acute illness or extraordinary causes include:

  • Acute illness – eg hospital admission, serious injury, severe asthma, severe anxiety or depression. Does not include minor symptoms associated with colds, diarrhoea, headaches, hay fever – for which off the shelf pharmaceuticals are available.
  • Loss or bereavement – eg death of close family member, 
  • significant family/relationship issues.
  • Hardship/trauma – eg victim of crime or sudden loss of income or employment.

 


Time limits apply for all Special Consideration Applications. 

 

A completed and signed application form (found at your faculty office, or on the Swinburne website), together with appropriate documentary evidence is to be lodged with your Faculty Office no later than 5.00pm on the third working day after the examination/test/presentation or due date for the submission of an assessment.
